When you put something on your skin for a long period of time (like lotion) there's a chance of absorption, which means chemicals get absorbed through the outer surface of the skin into the body.
These chemicals can then enter the bloodstream and cause negative health effects in areas of the body other than the skin.
Research shows that chemicals can be absorbed through the skin, like parabens, phthalates, bisphenols, and sunscreen chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate -. all of which can be found in personal care products! We definitely don't want to be putting chemicals like that on our body!
Here’s a list of things you probably want to avoid:
Parabens: Used in products as an inexpensive preservative, parabens are an ingredient to avoid in lotions.
Synthetic Dyes: It’s well known that artificial dyes in food can lead to behavioral problems, but these compounds might not be much safer in topical products.
Phthalates: While many types of phthalates have been banned in some products since 2008, these chemical plasticizers are still abundant today.
Sulfates: most commonly taking the form of sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, these compounds are added to cleaning products to boost foaming and remove dirt.
